Traditional Japanese "Maekake" apron
This product is made in Toyohashi City in Aichi Prefecture; a place that is famed for its "maekake" or apron manufacture since the olden days.
The "ho maekake" has been traditionally worn by Japanese merchants, including rice and sake vendors, as a work apron. It is said that the origin of the Japanese "maekake" dates back to the 15th century. It's name, "maekake" or "maetare", references the draping or letting loose of the apron on the front side of the body. And it has been proven to be a useful garb for the merchants, as it protected their waists and clothes underneath from wear and tear.
The "maekake" evolved into its current form during the Edo Period and during the Meiji Period "shop numbers" were commonly dyed onto them and they came to be used as uniforms and even advertisement displays. Toyohashi City in Aichi Prefecture - the number one producer of "maekake" in Japan - drastically expanded during the post-war years of 1950 to 1970. Along with Japan's economic development, the production of "maekake" has also risen. Starting with sake brewers, various "maekake" with shop numbers and names printed on them have been made for rice, miso and soy sauce merchants; fertilizer vendors; and food manufacturers and many other businesses. The "maekake" is now ubiquitous throughout Japan.
